HAIR UPDATES

Hey lovelies!
This is a short post to keep you up to date with my healthy hair journey.

  • I am currently 11 weeks post relaxer. I plan on relaxing my hair on 11th April 2015 at 18 weeks post relaxer. I got braids on Friday to help me stretch that long. I plan on keeping my braids for 6 weeks, and will wash and condition my hair as usual in the braids.

  • I started taking Hairfinity again, and I am halfway through with the first bottle. I got a 2 month supply.

  • I did an unofficial length check before I got my braids installed and I am hoping I can finally get to APL with my next relaxer.

That is my update! To keep up with day to day updates, be sure to follow me on IG @NISA_HRHJ and like the Ms Direction Gh Facebook page.

Relaxer Update|| 23 Weeks Post (The End of a Long Stretch)

Today, 6th December 2014 I ended my longest relaxer stretch yet, at 23 weeks post relaxer.
I used “ORS HAIRepair No Lye Conditioning Relaxer System,” instead of my usual “Profectiv Color Restore.” I wanted to give this one a try because I heard such good things about it and I wasn’t disappointed.

I’m in school right now but I went to home to get this touch up done and with a new stylist. This stylist created such a good impression for herself last week.

The Story- I washed my hair at home and deep conditioned. Left my DC in my hair and went to the stylist who lives right across my house, to rinse and get a roller set. My hair was so tangled and clamping together and the stylist, using a wide toothed comb and a large needle (The ones used for weaving) detangled for more than an hour and then used a big comb for my roller set as I was 22 weeks post. I knew instantly, I wanted her to relax my hair this week.

Before the process began

 The Relaxer Process:
Soon as I got to the salon, I told her exactly what I wanted;
1.       No overlapping
2.       Nape and edges last
3.       We are working fast and with time.
And she complied. She was ready to do it the way I wanted it done.

I usually use Vaseline to base my edges and already processed ends before relaxing but I knew the relaxer kit had a cuticle shield which served the same purpose so I skipped that.

She sectioned my hair, coated my ends and based my hairline.

Then started to apply the relaxer at which point I started the stopwatch on my phone
Her relaxer process was a bit different than I’m used to and I loved it. She applied the new growth to all sections on my head before returning to the first section to smooth.

She used her fingers to smooth, but after 6 months my new growth was a beast so she asked if I wanted a comb and I said yes.
Smoothed out and no overlaps. She listens!

The application and smoothing process took 26 minutes!
Right after smoothing in the relaxer, literally right after, she indicated it was time to wash out.

Shampooed 3 times, with the “ORS HAIRepair Conditioning Neutralizing shampoo with color cue” that came with the kit.
Followed with the “ORS HAIRepair Nourishing Conditioner” and sat under the hooded dryer for 10 minutes”
Deep Conditioning!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rinsed out, searched for the leave in in the kit…….lol, found none.
So, she used the Dark and Lovely leave in conditioner, some setting lotion and proceeded to roller set.

I used magnetic (smooth) rollers instead of the brush rollers which I prefer because she suggested it. Went back under the hooded dryer for what I’m going to assume was 20-25 minutes.
Roller sets and music!
And then she gave me a trim. Cutting almost an inch in the back, which was expected, and about ½ inch in the front. She said my ends didn’t look weak but after a year without trimming, I felt the need to.

Went home and took pictures…….haha. I loved how this relaxer update went especially after 23 weeks. I would love to stretch again, and I hope to make my goal of Armpit Length pretty soon.

Musings!!!!!!!!

This healthy hair journey is work. No lie! At the same time it's like sooooo worth it.  Like really!
I'm starting to feel frustrated as the year is ending.

1. MY GOAL OF APL HAIR BY DECEMBER!!!!! Where do I even start? I'm scared, plain and simple. I'm scared because I do not see myself making my goal and I know this and I'm disappointed. i know I'm probably being too hard on myself and I know it was an 'impossible' goal when I set it, but I still did. Has me so engrossed in hair thoughts. Plus I'm afraid I might have a setback. Lol. I'm just paranoid and afraid of the unknown. I'm currently in braids which is a good thing because my hair would have suffered.

2. I AM READY FOR A RELAXER TOUCH UP!!!!!! 20 weeks 4days post currently and ready. I'm in braids but I just know it's time I got a touch up. I plan on using ORS HairRepair Creme Relaxer. It will be my first time using it. I have gotten used to and fallen in love with the Profectiv Color Restore Relaxer. But for some reason, I'm drawn towards this one. I already made my order and I will have it on December 5th from Urban Makes. If you are in Gh and want to get a hair product or styling tool, head on to Urban Makes.

3. HAIR PRODUCTS AND TOOLS!!!!!!! I'm needing and wanting quite a number of hair products. I am going to get some and some I won't even think about due to monetary factors. Any one on a hhj know s how this feels. Plus I'm thinking of ways, I can spend less on my hhj with respect to praoducts. I have recently ordered from Urban makes; a Deep Conditioner (Elasta QP-11+), Processing caps,Peppermint Oil, JBCO. I'm wanting; Curlformers, A moisturizer, and a hair straigthener with heat settimg (YES!! I won't risk it though because I might straighten my hair e'rr day. lol).

4. UNHEALTHY HAIR!!!!!! My! My!! My!!! It is like I have an 'unhealthy hair' radar. I keep spotting hair that will do with a good deep condition, a trim, a wash and a BIG CHOP!!!! CUT IT ALL OFF. lol. And it is because I am on a hhj. It is slowly becoming a pet peeve. Welp! Plus unhealthy pony tails with rubber bands. Like you think they would know that rubber bands did that. Oh well!

5. HEALTHY HAIR AND HAIR ENVY!! Amazing thick hair be it relaxed or natural got me drooling. I pass by ladies with thick ponytails and I always look twice. I need to weave check some of these ladies. Seriously though!!!!

Anyway! Follow my Fb page!! MS DIRECTION GH

That is all with my reflection or thoughts. Let me know I am not alone! Do y'all feel like this too. Leave a comment.

The Internet and HealthyHair Journeys

On my healthy hair journey I have come to really appreciate the internet. The internet has been a major source of information. Through the internet I have been able to come in contact with, and share experiences with ladies world wide. by going on Google and watching videos on YouTube, I have found solutions to my hair problems. By reading the blog post of ladies on their healthy hair journeys, I have come to know that I am not alone. I have also come to know support and made friends with people.
The Internet also, just keeps getting better. And recent times have seen the rise of apps. Yes! APPS EVERYWHERE. From the Google PlayStore, On Apple, on Windows. Everything is run on apps. I intend on and I'm taking full advantage of this for my hair journey. I'm going to show you how.
1. I use my Google Search app for everything. I search for DIY recipes, I search for Product reviews before I buy any new product, and I search for new tips and tricks for hair growth and retention. YES! I do that.

2. YouTube!!!!! I love love love YouTube. Watching the videos feels like I'm getting first hand information. Some of these YouTubers are so warm and they know exactly what they talking about. I watch everything hair related on youtube. I love YouTube hair progress videos, relaxer updates, D-I-Ys, Big Chops, wash day, hair tutorials everything. BTW I stated my own YouTube. Y'all gotto check it. Pretty please.

3. Instagram!!!! Now that's my jam. (I just totally rhymed) It is an app, which offers you the chance to share your progresses and setbacks though images. It has some great support and if you follow the right page, it has tons of information. Beware though, some people can bite. Yikes! But i love this app.

4. Water Your Body! Now I have a problem drinking water. And it is important to drink water not just for your hair journey, but overall health. I was introduced to this app by a lovely lady called Fungi, and I absolutely love it. The great thing about this app is that, it takes your weight and calculates how much water you need. You can however increase it to your preference. You can turn on and off notifications for reminders. It is a great app hands down and very very useful. Do download it from your app stores.

5. The Hair Diary and The Hair Journal. 2 different apps. Similar features. Few Differences. The Hair Journal, I bought from the playstore, however, I hear there is a free one available on apple devices. I love it. Well, loved it till, THE HAIR DIARY. I prefer the format. 1 keep both though. The Hair Dairy is free to download int the app store. (I'm getting lazy.....lol)

Updates

Hey loves, I know I have been away for so long. I’m really sorry. School just started for me and it took a while to get adjusted to this semester’s timetable. Changes were still being made but for now it is stable. I also had a problem doing some of my course registrations but by the grace of God that has been resolved. Wednesdays are my most liberal days and so I’m making it blog days. I promise to bring you good and insightful posts.
The HHJ Kitchen Finds series will come on Fridays. I’ll try my very hardest to be frequent with those.

What is new with my hair?
For the first two weeks after school started I was wigging it. I used a pixie cut wig cap because it was easier to style and I didn’t want to deal with my hair while I was stressed. I wanted to wig longer than two weeks but my cornrows needed to be redone every week since it messed up pretty quick. I was 10+ weeks post relaxer then and having my hair parted every week was not exactly fun.

This is why I made the decision to get something less manipulative. Last weekend I got a full sew in weave installed. I was skeptical about this weave because I had never tried this style and I didn’t know how it would look. For starters it was longer than I’m used to, and then it is wavy. I can say so far that I love it because I feel pretty and I get complimented a lot. I’m going to try to keep this for a minimum of 4 weeks. It shouldn’t be hard because school work will keep me occupied.

What else is new?
My YouTube is in operation now. I have 2 videos so far:

It's My Hairniversary!!!!!

365 days of conscious efforts to take care of myself, and changing my lifestyle for hair growth. A year of learning and adapting to meet my hair needs. I have had questions from people about this journey i have decided to take. I will address these concerns.

The most common question I'm faced with is, "Why are you on this journey? Why did you decide to grow out your hair?" - I decided to start this journey because I was made to believe by people around me and by myself that I had unhealthy 'non-growing' hair. I was tired of looking at other people with thick long hair and wishing it was me and I was ready to make that me. On 16th July last year, I got my hair relaxed for the first time since completing secondary school and decided that this was my first step to long healthy hair. i opted for a relaxer treatment because I fancied long hair and I wanted to have a better idea of my growth without shrinkage. I had done a lot of research before making this decision and I felt inspired by what I saw on the internet and YouTube. I had a lot of hope for my hair. I look back and I'm glad I made that decision.

Correction: 13-07-13**
I have also had people ask me, "How do you stay motivated? How do you have s much zeal?" - First and foremost, I think that to be on any journey one should learn to be self motivated and try to persevere without external support. Yes it's not easy. Yes, the journey is so much better with support, but if you are overly dependent on that you will give up. You should know that, whatever you decide to do, you do for you.
I have never lacked in support. My mum, my sister and my family have been very supportive during this past year. I also have a very very supportive Whatsapp group. We keep ourselves motivated sharing our successes and setbacks encouraging each other.

One year Comparison Shots
A personal question to myself. Am I pleased with where I am now? - Absolutely! I am beyond where I ever thought I would be. I know now what my hair likes. I know my staple products and I am beyond content. I see my progress. Other people see my products and are inspired and it is really a fulfilling feeling. 365 days of continuous progress. I have never felt setback. And when I have my hair down, my confidence is to the roof. I am absolutely pleased with where I am now!

Word of Advice: All hair grows. Slowly or Fast, it's growing. You need patience and consistency. And your hair definitely needs Tender, Loving Care if you want it to thrive. If you are one to lean on support find a way to get your friends to also start their journey. Keep one another motivated. Learn to be self- driven. Your progress will not be the same as others. What works for you would not work for others. Find a regimen that works for you. Be yourself. Take loads of pictures. See results!

350+ days comparison shots.
